Consideration of the Pakistan and China Free trade Agreement (goods)

The Committee on Regional Trade Agreements reviewed the FTA between Pakistan and China in its 53rd Session on 20 April 2009.

China and Pakistan launched the FTA negotiations on 5 April 2005, after six rounds of negotiations, the Agreement was signed on 24 November 2006 and entered into force on 1 July 2007. The Agreement mainly covered trade in goods and investment. The text and annexes of the agreement is available here

Both parties presented the major aspects of this agreement in terms of tariffs reduction / elimination and the product coverage. The two parties have also launched negotiations on trade in services in December 2006, and signed an Agreement on 21 February 2009.
Members raised concerns about the substantial all trade coverage of the agreement. The parties’ answers to the questions asked by members helped to clarify some aspects of the agreement mainly for the extension of its coverage.
